AS4: Task 5 Re draft essay

Final Evaluation Essay

I created an advert based on a Rimmel London mascara, which is a product made by a very successful company. This product is known as a product mainly used by females and as a female myself, I used a product which can be used for girls, young women and women, however although this product can be used by any aged females, I decided to aim this advert towards young women. These were my target audience. My reason for making this decision is because the advert that I created was very modern, leading onto the idea of it being lively and fresh. Based on this, my advert was aimed between the ages of 16-20 year old's because that age group would be able to relate to such style best and also they would want to buy something which best fits their young lifestyle. This gave my product the advantage of being sold quickly and effectively.

My filmed an edited mascara advert was complete, so it was time for me to gather some personal feedback based on weather my advert was good, weather it could be improved or not. To carry out my audience feedback I used a website called survery monkey to help me to gather information. Survey monkey is a website that is open for everyone and anyone to use to create surveys for whatever purpose, my purpose was for my mascara advert. The very first thing I included for my survey was questions. I asked up to 7 questions and some of the questions I asked were: "Have you ever used mascara before?" "If yes, what mascara product have you used?" and "At what age did you start wearing mascara?". I felt as though my questions in my survey were effective because it gave the impression that I wanted to understand and relate to the audience. To back up this point I would state that most of my research was Qualitative as well as my feedback as most of the questions were open ended for the audience.  However, there were some questions in my survey that were quantitative, for example. "Are there any particular colours you would wear?" colours listed "Black, Brown and pink" There are hardly any options for the audience and causes questions like these not to be 'open ended'.

I personally thought that as a a result my advertisement was done structuredly. My reason being is that I didn't just begin my advert, I began it by thinking about all the equipment I'm going to use, the people and most importantly how the advert will proceed. The chosen product, mascara is an every day product which the public is very familiar with so I wasn't creating a totally new scenery for my audience, I was creating an advert that they were familiar with and I knew that. First of all, my advert showed consistency in the style and what it was actually about, and this is important because nobody would want to see an advert that would go off topic and make absolutely no sense, right? I took into consideration the type of music I was using too. I used "Keri Hilson - Pretty Girl Rock" I chose this song because I felt as though it was best related because the meaning of the song is that the girl is beautiful, she knows that and she wants to show anyone and everyone that she's just that. In relation to this, my advert also has this similar message that when using this type of mascara, you'll, not be beautiful, but know your beautiful; this message is very inspirational. My other reason for the success of my advert is that I didn't use too many people. Sometimes when making an advert you'll need a number of people to take part based on the advert you are creating, however in my advertisement I felt as though that wasn't needed. I say this because, the whole idea for the advert was for it to be calm, smooth and concentrated for the audience. So I figured that  only using one person for the whole advert would engage the viewer more on the subject.

Based on some of the feedback I recieved from the audience I personally feel as though there could have been improvements. For instance, the sound and the issue of the false advertisement. When doing the focus group on my mascara advert, the audience stated that they struggled to hear the voice over in the background. This problem occurred because once all editing was complete on FinalCut Express, I changed all sound settings and size settings but then when I exported the footage on YouTube the voice over was very small and all that could be heard was the music that I included. I'm l was not entirely sure what the issue was, but in the future I will take this into consideration.

My advert successfully sells the product because it clearly shows the product, the message behind the product and the use of the product. I personally think that this is the most important thing when advertising because it gives the audience a reason to buy the product, so because of this my advertising will successfully sell its product effectively. Adding onto that, the way in which my camera movements are formed is professional. I say this because in every shot of the advert, there is always a head and shoulder shot and this type of camera technique is a very focused one. This was the exact idea my group and wanted to display on the audience, for them to only focus on the girl and this shot helps with that. Overall, my mascara advertisement was a great idea. The style, music, character, story line was all thought through carefully and structurally, this is what makes the advert enjoyable and successful. We wanted to create an advert not just for the sake of creating it but based on something relating to us as a group and individuals. Makeup is a product which we as girls love and we felt as though doing this would get any body else who likes this kind of product, to relate with use too.

AS4: Task 3 Present results

feedback on the mascara ad

Based on my results, I have presented results based on my audience feedback. Each result shows what the audience thinks about my mascara product/advert.

Survey Monkey:

Summary:

The focus group and the survey monkey was the two main results I gathered from my
audience. This feedback was easy for me to look into as it came through I'm a quick and
sufficient way. The focus group was a better result as I got to have a present conversation between
the audience to know exactly what is good about my advert, what may need improving and what
may be inappropriate. Adding onto that, the very first method I used was survey monkey. As it was
my first time using survey monkey, I thought that it may have been a reasonable way of  gathering
results from the audience because it involved simple and easy questions  that I felt like the audience
could relate to. However, I personally think that compared to my focus group method, survey
monkey is less effective. Firstly, the process is rather slow in terms of thinking about the questions
to write and to set up the survey. Secondly, I felt like even though there were questions which were
open ended, I didn't get to truthfully know and relate to my audience because it was being done
through a computer.

AS4: Task 2 Screening

Screening

To collect audience feedback from my chosen product, the second method I used was a focus group. This is Quantitative research. The pros and cons of using this type of method is that I had the chance to be introduced to new ideas from different adverts by the audience. It also have me the opportunity to gain an insight into what my audience may like, for example. The questions I asked were:

1) Question: What is the target audience?

Response: Teenagers

2) Question: Do you think the advert was effective?

Response: The ideas that have just been shown, will be great to use in our own advert because it'll make the advert effective.

3) Question: Do you think the advert is effective?

Response: Some answers were positive.

The negative feedback we received was about the recording in the background. The audience stated that they struggled to hear the recording in the background because the music was louder than the recording. The other feedback was about the false advertising because they saw that she was wearing false eyelashes in the advert. However we used the eyelashes to accentuate her natural eyelashes to give a full effect on the eyes.

Pros and Cons of my advert:

Pros:
- Research is qualitative and quantitative.
- All qualitative research/information gathered is reliable and correct

Cons:
- The audience may disagree with the advert or even the information used in it.
- All quantitative research/information gathered may not be reliable.

The age group of the audience that we presented our advert to are between the ages of 17-18 years. This age group was best because as they are a young generation, they will be aware and familiar of the type of mascara product we were presenting. In the presentation we asked some open ended questions and some closed. This was a chance for the audience to go into depth about what they thought about the advert, on the other hand we asked closed questions so that the response could be exactly what we wanted and straight forward. Furthermore, our feedback was very reliable because that was the first time for the audience to see the advert so they would obviously say what comes to mind first which makes the responses honest. However, if there were any improvements to be made it'll be that there would not be any use of false eyelashes to not give the impression of false advertising and more scenes would have been included.

AS3: Task Two - Production - DONE

Production

In my group, there are four of us, me, Shemi, Koria and Toni and we all had specific parts we were responsible of in this advert. We each decided that everyone were to take control of a position where we were comfortable with and familiar with too. Shemi was in charge of filming, Toni was in charge of making sure all the equipment was safe and ready to use, Koria was the actress of the advertisement and last but not least I held the position of writing the script and recording a voice over for the advert.

The very first thing with getting ready to make a film, is making sure that all equipment is gathered and ready to use. To know when and where my group and I where using these equipments, we had to sign a track record sheet in our classroom to show that we have taken the equipments needed. For instance, we needed equipment such as the camera and the tripod, only a small number of equipment was used. This is vital because if something were to happen to any of the equipment used the department would be aware of who last had those equipments.

As a group we needed to be aware of how we planned our advert and how we were going to stick to our plan, so based on this reason, we had to find a specific type of room that we were to film our advert. The plan for this advertisement was for it to be calm, so because of this we decided to do our filming in a drama studio and also in a clear, white space in a hallway. I personally felt as though filming the advert in the hallway was best suited for this advert because I wanted the result of the film to come across as calm and relaxing. This adds concentration on the subject.

The equipment and the place of where the advert were to be filmed was then complete so we then had to decide how we were going to film in such a dark room. In a stage such as this, lighting became very vital in the process. How much we were going to use was another factor we needed to take into consideration because we didn't want that when filming, it'll be too bright or too dark; we wanted it to be just right. Our advantage of filming our advert in this studio, was because there had already been lights that easily could be increased/dimmed to whatever brightness we wanted.

When filming the actress, (Koria) in the hallway we had to make sure that the natural light coming from outside wasn't beaming on her face too much. For this reason, we made sure that Koria stood opposite the window, this was so that an equal amount of light would be shown on her face. Very phew of us took part in the film so because of this she only had to stand in a small area of the studio. To film Koria we needed to make sure that she were to stand in a area which showed the whole of her face and top half of her body. The reason why I say only her face and the top half of her body is because those are all we need to see in the film.

Throughout the shoot, we took into consideration the how critical the health and safety was. When filming, it was vital that Shemi knew where she wanted to place the camera around the space in the studio, and because the studio was black it would be very risky for anybody in the room to mistakenly knock it down without being aware. So based on these reasons we only set up the camera when we knew we were ready to film our advert and if we weren't using the camera at times someone would be guiding it so that it couldn't fall off from the tripod. We never walked around with the camera on the tripod or the tripod left with its legs out so that it could prevent problems like breaking or cracking them.

How did I edit my film?

1) The very first step I did to begin editing my advert was by plugging in my camera's USB into the keyboard of the Apple MAC computer. I then dragged the clips that I needed onto the empty window on the left hand side of Photoshop.

2) Once I had all my clips loaded and ready to use, I began watching each clip to make sure of which ones I wanted to use. I started using the clip which I personally thought was best suited for to begin the advertisement.

3) In addition to that, I began working into more of the clips that I wanted to add onto my sequence.

4)  To develop my advert as a whole I included various amounts of trnasitions, effects, a voice over and some music.

5) This tool helped me move, erase, edit sounds, zoom in and out of anything that'll need to be done to refine my advert. I used the last tool which looks like a triangular pencil to edit how loud I wanted my sound the be in the video or how low as well. I used this for my voice over and my music.

6) Finally, my advert was complete and ready to be transferred onto my YouTube account and blog. There were various steps I had to complete before uploading the clip. I had to change the sound settings, size settings and video settings.
